NEAR THE END OF A PRIVATE GRAVEL ROAD, this shingle-style home is sited in a calm and tranquil setting. Simple, strong, and handsome material selections display a classic and enduring lakeside vernacular. Coupled with tremendous views through towering mature white pines to the western shores of Lake Sunapee and Mount Sunapee to the Southwest, this waterfront home has generational appeal.
The walkout design of this home is unique and informed by the topography of the lot. The desire for outdoor living spaces adjacent to primary living spaces on both the main floor and lower level presented a design opportunity to create multiple levels of outdoor living spaces. The ashlar bluestone patios on the lakeside are supported by burly stone walls assembled from a custom mix of New England granite field stones.
Over the past 2 decades, environmental responsibility and stewardship have become a hallmark of lakeside building and this project is no different. Several tactics to manage stormwater runoff are employed at this site to protect the water quality of Lake Sunapee including the use of pervious pavers, infiltration and collection drip edges, dry wells, and a bio-retention garden filled with native riparian plant species.
